Community Health Law Project
Founded in 1976, the Community Health Law Project is a statewide nonprofit advocacy and legal services organization. Originally designed to deliver legal and advocacy services to the increasing number of people with mental illness leaving institutions and living in the community during the late 1970s, CHLP has expanded its innovative service model to include people from nearly all disability groups–those with developmental disabilities, visual impairments, physical disabilities, and people living with HIV/AIDS.

NJ Department of Children and Families – Domestic Violence Services
The Office of Domestic Violence Services (ODVS) funds 22 domestic violence programs and the New Jersey Coalition to End Domestic Violence. There is at least one DCF-funded domestic violence program in each of New Jersey’s 21 counties.

Community Foundation of New Jersey – Jersey Battered Women’s Service
Founded in 1976, JBWS celebrates more than 40 years of offering hope and safety to victims of domestic violence and their families. Our mission is the prevention of domestic violence through the protection and empowerment of the victim, the rehabilitation of family members, and the education of the public about domestic violence and its consequences.

Services include a 24-hour helpline, safe house, transitional living, counseling, children’s services, batterers’ intervention, vocational counseling and more. The newest initiative is the 2016 opening of the Morris Family Justice Center, a coordinated, one-stop resource provided by multiple service agencies and led by JBWS.

Women Rising – Women and Family Support Services
For over 110 years, WomenRising has been helping women and their families. Our clients are in need – in need of jobs, safety from domestic violence, freedom from substance abuse, safe homes for children.

WomenRising meets these needs by providing supportive counseling, crisis intervention, workforce development and job placement, shelter for victims of domestic violence, outreach, advocacy, and referrals.

WomenRising is the foremost community-based organization for women in Hudson County. WomenRising assists women and their families to achieve self-sufficiency and live safe, productive and fulfilling lives, through social services, economic development, and advocacy services.

The Honorable Marie White Bell American Inn of Court In 2007, Joan M. Burke, then President of the Association of Black Women Lawyers of NJ, appointed a committee to explore the possibility of creating a new chapter in the American Inns of Court. Her vision was to create a learning environment for fellow attorneys to improve their legal acumen while developing a strong sense of ethics and fostering collegiality. To that end, The Anne E. Thompson Inn of Court was formed. The Inn’s Executive Committee determined that the name of the Inn should be changed every ten years in order to honor jurists who have made significant contributions to the legal profession and community at large, and in 2018, it was renamed the Marie White Bell Inn of Court.

National Bar Association
The National Bar Association was founded in 1925 and is the nation’s oldest and largest national network of predominantly African-American attorneys and judges. It represents the interests of approximately 65,000 lawyers, judges, law professors, and law students. The NBA is organized around 23 substantive law sections, 9 divisions, 12 regions and 80 affiliate chapters throughout the United States and around the world.

Garden State Bar Association
The GSBA is New Jersey’s oldest and largest professional organization for African American judges, lawyers, and law students. Since 1975, the GSBA has continuously assisted African- Americans and other ethnic minorities in becoming an effective part of the judicial and legal systems. The Association also seeks to advance the science of jurisprudence, improve the administration of justice, support initiatives designed to improve the economic condition of all individuals, and eliminate discrimination and inequality based on racial, ethnic or sexual considerations.
